2012 Moir Stakes – Moonee Valley Race Preview

September 12th, 2012

The Group 2 Moir Stakes is set to run at Moonee Valley racecourse on Friday September 28, 2012.

Run over a distance of 1,200 metres, the 2012 AJ Moir Stakes is worth $300,000 in prize money.

The 2012 Moir Stakes is open to horses of all ages and is run under weight-for-age conditions.

Also known as the Schweppes Stakes, the 2012 Moir Stakes shares its race night with the Group 2 Bill Stutt Stakes, Group 3 JRA Cup and Group 3 Champagne Stakes.

The 2012 Moir Stakes will be held on a Friday night for the first time this year, after originally being part of the Cox Plate Day program.

Last year’s winner of the Moir Stakes was Black Caviar, who won the race by an ubelievable six lengths.

Black Caviar won the Group 2 Australia Stakes prior to her Moir Stakes win, before going on to win the Group 1 Lightning Stakes in her next start.

The unbeaten mare will not be back to defend her title in the 2012 Moir Stakes after injuring herself whilst winning the Group 1 Diamond Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot racecourse in England in June.

There is no guarantee the mare will race again, however, should she return to the track it will not be until next year’s autumn carnival.

Black Caviar has won all 22 of her race starts and has earned more than $6.1 million in prize money.
