AJ Moir Stakes To Be Group 1 In 2013

September 13th, 2012

The AJ Moir Stakes will be given Group 1 status from 2013 after it was upgraded by the Australian Pattern Committee.

The race has been won by Black Caviar on two occasions whilst being classified under its current Group 2 status.

Run over a distance of 1,200 metres, the AJ Moir Stakes is run under weight-for-age conditions.

The AJ Moir Stakes is open to horses of all ages and is worth a total of $300,000 in prize money in 2012.

Also known as the Schweppes Stakes, the AJ Moir Stakes has constantly been used by some of the country’s top horses as stepping stone to some of the biggest spring races of the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival.

Australian Patten Committee chairman, Alan Brown highlighted the reason for upgrading the AJ Moir Stakes, along with the Memsie Stakes and Canterbury Stakes.

“These three races all clearly exceeded the benchmarks set for Group One races and thoroughly deserve elevation,” Brown said.

“The Memsie has been on average the highest-rated Group Two race in Australia and the Moir the second.”
