2012 AJ Moir Stakes Nominations Released

September 24th, 2012

A smart list of 15 gallopers make up the AJ Moir Stakes 2012 nominations for this Friday night at Moonee Valley, one of the surefire favourites in the early entries being Gerald Ryan’s class filly Snitzerland.

Runner-up in to current Cox Plate favourite Pierro in the autumn’s Golden Slipper, the daughter of Snitzel shoots for her third straight win this season in the $300,000 Group 2 AJ Moire Stakes (1200m) which is one of four Group races on the Moonee Valley night racing program this Friday.

Snitzerland has won both the Group 3 San Domenico Stakes and the Group 2 Danehill Stakes this time in and is heading towards the Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes during the Melbourne Cup Carnival.

The other big name AJ Moire Stakes nominee for 2012 is Rob Heathcote’s consistent Queenslander Buffering.

Buffering has raced in 10 Group 1 features to date recording seven minor placings and resumes on Saturday having last run second to Mid Summer Music in the Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap in Brisbane on June 9.

“Buffering will run in the Moir at Moonee Valley on Friday night” Heathcote confirmed.

“I never planned to run him in the Moir, I didn’t think we’d have the time to get him ready after the Stradbroke, I didn’t even tell the owners.

“It was only after his gallop last week where he impressed me so much that I thought, bugger it, he’s a weight for age specialist and was always flying down on the Tuesday with the other two (Solzhenitsyn and Excellantes) anyway”.

Following the AJ Moir Stakes Buffering will follow the path of Black Caviar from last spring running in the Group 2 Schillaci Stakes at Caulfield on October 13, the Group 1 Manikato Stakes at Moonee Valley on October 26 and then the Group 1 Patinack Farm Classic at Flemington on November 10.

“With no Black Caviar or Hay List, he has the opportunity of, at least for spring, assuming the mantle of the best sprinter,” Heathcote said.

“I know there are probably a dozen trainers thinking they also have a similar opportunity, but I would think we’re first in line going into the four big sprints.”

Other notable 2012 AJ Moir Stakes nominations including the Peter Moody-trained Curtana, Gai Waterhouse’s Group 1 performer Hallowell Belle, Joe Pride’s last start Concorde Stakes winner Tiger Tees, and the Group 1 winning duo of Atomic Force and Green Birdie.

Acceptances for the Moonee Valley Friday night races will be taken on Wednesday with the AJ Moir Stakes final field and barriers to be published right here.
