Suffering a shock defeat in the Group 2 McEwen Stakes (1000m) first-up on September 6th, the world’s leading sprinter Lankan Rupee has been nominated for the 2014 Moir Stakes.

Securing a particularly impressive record of nine wins and four minor places from just 17 competitive starts so far, Lankan Rupee was unable to produce much of a consistent run of form until being gelded at the conclusion of his 2013 autumn preparation, and has since been close to unstoppable.

Undoubtedly returning to racing in career-best form this year, the son of Redoute’s Choice won the Group 2 Rubiton Stakes (1100m) by four lengths first-up before securing three exceptional victories at the highest level of Australian racing back-to-back; winning each of the Group 1 Oakleigh Plate (1100m), Group 1 Newmarket Handicap (1200m) and Group 1 T.J. Smith Stakes (1200m).

Expected to blitz his competition upon returning to the track in the McEwen Stakes, Lankan Rupee was clearly still quite green around the edges, finishing second to fellow Moir Stakes nominee Angelic Light.

Despite the minor setback, both trainer Mick Price and jockey Craig Newitt are confident of a return to the winner’s circle for Lankan Rupee in the 2014 Moir Stakes.

Returning to racing in smart following this spring following more than a year in the paddock with a string of unfortunate injuries, Angelic Light arguably secured her most impressive victory to date in the McEwen Stakes and is primed for maiden Group 1 success in the Moir Stakes.

Contesting a strong and consistent record of five wins and as many minors from 13 competitive starts, the Holy Roman Emperor mare finishing outside the places just once in her most recently-completed campaign through the 2013 Autumn; running on for third in the Listed Kevin Hayes Stakes (1200m) and second in both the Listed MSS Security Stakes (1100m) and Group 1 Robert Sangster Classic (1200m).

Finishing third in the Listed Carlyon Stakes (1000m) first-up this time in, trainer Robbie Griffiths is confident Angelic Light’s McEwen victory will give his camp a mental edge leading into the Moonee Valley feature.

Finishing second to Samaready in the 2013 edition of the Moir Stakes, trainer Robert Heathcote is thrilled with the condition of resuming champion Buffering and is confident of going one better this year.

A standout performer over the 2013 Spring Racing Carnival, Buffering followed up his Moir Stakes second with three classy Group 1 victories; taking out the Manikato Stakes (1200m), VRC Sprint Classic (1200m) and Winterbottom Stakes (1200m).

Unable to reach the same peaks over four starts this year, the Mossman gelding followed up a seventh in the Group 2 Challenge Stakes (1000m) with third placings in each of the T.J. Smith Stakes, Group 1 BTC Cup (1200m) and Group 1 Doomben 10,000 (1350m).

Returning to racing in career best form this year, Tiger Tees will be chasing a second Group 1 title in the Moir Stakes after being included in nominations by trainer Joe Pride.

Winning the Listed Falvelon (1200m) at Brisbane’s Eagle Farm Racecourse first-up this year, the Dubawi gelding appeared outclassed when beating a solitary runner home in the Challenge Stakes but responded in the best way possible when charging home to win the Group 1 The Galaxy (1100m) on March 29th.

Continuing to impressive via fourth in the TJ Smith and third in the Group 1 All Aged Stakes (1400m), Tiger Tees won both the Group 3 Aurie’s Star Handicap (1200m) and Group 2 Warwick Stakes (1400m) upon returning to racing this time in; finishing second to Lucia Valentina in the Group 2 Tramway Stakes (1400m) last time out on September 6th.

A final field and barrier draw for the 2014 Moir Stakes is due to be released on Wednesday morning.
