Five Confirmed for 2014 Moir Stakes

September 24th, 2014

Just five runners have been confirmed to contest this Friday’s featured Group 1 Moir Stakes (1200m) at Moonee Valley Racecourse, highlighted by the return to Group 1 company of the world’s leading sprinter, Lankan Rupee.

Claiming nine wins and four minors over just 17 competitive starts so far, Lankan Rupee was unable to secure much of a consistent run of form until being gelded at the conclusion of his 2013 autumn campaign; since which he has been close to unstoppable.

Returning to the track in career best form this year, the son of Redoute’s Choice claimed a four length win in the Group 2 Rubiton Stakes (1100m) first-up before completing an incredible run of three consecutive victories at the highest level of Australian racing in taking out each of the Group 1 Oakleigh Plate (1100m), Group 1 Newmarket Handicap (1200m) and Group 1 T.J. Smith Stakes (1200m), all with complete ease.

Allocated barrier 2 for the Moir Stakes, trainer Mick Price and jockey Craig Newitt are particularly confident of a fourth Group 1 title for the five-year-old on Friday.

Finishing second to Samaready in the 2013 edition of the Moir Stakes, trainer Robert Heathcote has been thrilled with the work produced by champion sprinter Buffering in the lead-up to his racing return and is confident his entrant has the form and class to beat Lankan Rupee.

A standout over the 2013 Spring Carnival, Buffering claimed impressive wins in each of the Group 1 Manikato Stakes (1200m), Group 1 VRC Sprint Classic (1200m) and Group 1 Winterbottom Stakes (1200m) following the Moir Stakes.

Unable to reach the same heights over four starts in the autumn and winter this year, the Mossman gelding finished seventh in the Group 2 Challenge Stakes (1000m) first-up before running on for third in each of the Group 1 T.J. Smith Stakes (1200m), Group 1 BTC Cup (1200m) and Group 1 Doomben 10,000 (1350m).

Also hitting career-best form over the 2013 Spring Carnival, Rebel Dane is yet to appear on course competitively this spring, but is offered a good chance of first-up success in the small Moir Stakes field on Friday.

Winning the Group 3 Show County Quality (1200m) first-up in August last year, the California Dane entire was unlucky to be blocked for a run and fourth in the Group 3 Bobbie Lewis Quality (1200m), but responded in the best way possible when charging home to win the Group 1 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes (1400m) on September 29th.

Finishing second to Lankan Rupee in the T.J. Smith first-up on autumn, Rebel Dane is known for his strong performances fresh from the paddock and will be partnered by leading jockey Craig Williams in the Moir Stakes.

Arguably securing her most impressive win to date when delivering Lankan Rupee a shock defeat in the Group 2 McEwen Stakes (1000m) last time out on September 6th, trainer Robbie Griffiths has confirmed Angelic Light for Friday’s featured Moir Stakes.

Spending more than a year on the sidelines with an unfortunate strong of injuries, the Holy Roman Emperor mare finished third in the Listed Carlyon Stakes (1000m) first-up this time in and appears primed for her tilt at maiden Group 1 success this weekend.

Rounding out the field for the 2014 Moir Stakes, Unpretentious will undoubtedly have to produce a career-best performance to win on Friday, but has good form over class, track and distance, having finished third in the Group 1 William Reid Stakes (1200m) at Moonee Valley during autumn.
