Lankan Rupee jumped the best of the 5 horse field, but jockey Craig Newitt allowed front runner Buffering to take the lead and set the pace.

Buffering held strong into the short Moonee Valley straight and while Lankan Rupee surged to the line he was unable to catch the 7-year-old gelding who won by a head. Rebel Dane finished third.

Tonight’s win was the fourth Group 1 victory for Buffering and trainer Robert Heathcote was full of praise for his stable star.

“I am lost for words,” Heathcote said after the race.

“I thought he was off his game a little bit during the autumn, but it was a lovely ride from Damian and he rated him a treat.

“He put the pressure on at the 700 and it looked like he was going to go down there, but he is a little bulldog and he just fights.”

Buffering and Lankan Rupee will face off again at Moonee Valley in 4 weeks time with both horses set to contest the Group 1 Manikato Stakes.
