2015 Moir Stakes First-Up for Fontiton

August 10th, 2015

Fontiton more than stamped her claims as one to watch through a standout two-year-old season during the recent Autumn Carnival, and trainer Robert Smerdon has revealed a bold spring path for the talented filly that may begin in the 2015 Group 1 Moir Stakes (1000m) on October 2nd.

Having posted an impressive three wins from only four competitive appearances on course so far, Fontiton has not been seen at the races since finishing a luckless fifth when blocked late in the featured Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m) on February 28th.

Smerdon has been thrilled with the benefit the talented daughter of Turffontein has taken from her time away from racing and is confident the weight-for-age conditions of the 2015 Moir Stakes will play into the strengths of Fontiton, particularly at Moonee Valley.

“We’re thinking about the Moir,” Smerdon told AAP.

Smerdon is confident Fontiton is a genuine sprinter, and revealed the Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m) down the famous Flemington straight on October 31st will figure as her major target this time in.

“We didn’t nominate her for the Thousand Guineas and we’re going to keep her to sprinting,” Smerdon added.

“She’ll head towards the Coolmore Stud Stakes.”

Fontiton beat a handle field to the line in a strong Cranbourne barrier trial prior to her competitive debut last October, and made a successful transition to competition when taking out the $250,000 Inglis Banner (1000m) at the Valley on Cox Plate Day.

Returning this year for first-up success in the Group 3 Blue Diamond Preview F (1000m) on January 26th, the filly out of Personal Ensign claimed outright favouritism for the Blue Diamond Stakes when taking out the Group 2 Blue Diamond Prelude (1100m) a fortnight prior to the feature race.

Nominations for the 2015 Moir Stakes will be taken by Monday, September 28th while a final field and barrier draw will be completed and released two days later.
