2015 Moir Stakes to Suit Angelic Light

September 7th, 2015

Angelic Light was unlucky to sit out a good portion of the recent Autumn Carnival as a result of niggling injury, but trainer Robbie Griffiths is pleased with the condition of the mare this time and believes the new conditions of the 2015 Moir Stakes (1000m) figure as an ideal first-up target.

Angelic Light returned to racing in exceptional condition last spring; delivering champion sprinter Lankan Rupee his first defeat for the year in the Group 2 McEwen Stakes (1000m) before running fourth in the Moir Stakes (1200m) and second in the Group 1 Manikato Stakes (1200m) most notably.

Having returned for seventh in the Group 1 William Reid Stakes (1200m) on March 27th before tendon issues forced a return to the paddock, Griffiths is confident the conditions over the Moir Stakes over 1000m figure as an ideal first point of call for Angelic Light this time.

“She had a bit of tendon activity at the end of April, leading into May and we elected to bypass the Adelaide carnival and concentrate on the spring but the McEwen came up a bit soon,” Griffiths told AAP.

“So having that extra four weeks to just not push her through so quickly gives us a chance to have her right for the Moir.

“That’s the plan, to go first-up into the Moir.

“She’s working fine and all going well she’ll be on track for the Moir first-up.”

Posting five wins and six minors through her 17 career starts so far, Angelic Light stamped her claims as a runner to follow from her debut preparation in early 2012, but undoubtedly found peak condition for the first time through the 2013 Autumn Carnival, highlighted by a close second in the Group 1 Robert Sangster Classic (1200m).

Returning to the paddock for close to 18 months with a string of minor ailments prior to her Spring Carnival campaign last year, Angelic Light will likely be set for an appearance in the Manikato Stakes again this season; a race for which she ran an agonizingly-close second to Lankan Rupee last year, in a fanning finish.
