2016 Moir Stakes First-up for Chautauqua

June 14th, 2016

Chautauqua will remain in Australia and contest the 2016 Moir Stakes (1000m) as a first point of call in spring, rather than chase a lucrative payday in Japan as part of the Global Sprint Challenge.

Chautauqua has been the stable star for Team Hawkes for almost his entire racing career since first appearing on course competitively in 2013; posting an impressive twelve wins and eight minors through only twenty-two starts, highlighted by five wins at the highest level.

Having produced a typically smart performance to win the Group 1 Chairman’s Sprint Prize (1200m) at Sha Tin Racecourse in Hong Kong most recently on May 1st, prominent owner Rupert Legh told Racing Victoria a trip to Japan is off the table, with a view towards a Melbourne spring campaign beginning with the 2016 Moir Stakes.

“At this stage Plan A – and Plan A can change all the time – is we’ve elected to go Moir, Manikato, Darley, Hong Kong,” Legh said.

“We’re going to leave him in Australia (this spring). He’s an Australian horse, so we’ll let the Australian public enjoy a great racehorse.”

Chautauqua returned to racing in 2015 in smart form; capping an impressive autumn campaign with  a maiden win at the highest level in the Group 1 TJ Smith Stakes (1200m) at Royal Randwick during The Championships.

Returning in spring for consecutive wins in the Group 2 McEwen Stakes (1000m) and Group 2 Gilgai Stakes (1200m), the Encosta De Lago gelding charged home to win the Group 1 Manikato Stakes (1200m) before placing second in the Group 1 Darley Classic (1200m).

Savaging the line for success in the Group 1 Black Caviar Lightning Stakes (1000m) upon resuming this year, Chautauqua was unable to make up the distance late when third in the Group 1 Newmarket Handicap (1200m), but responded in the best way possible with a successful defence of his TJ Smith Stakes crown.

Nominations for the 2016 Moir Stakes are due to be taken on September 26th, while a field and barrier draw will be confirmed and released two days later.
