2016 Moir Stakes to Figure for Heatherly

June 29th, 2016

Co-trainer Simon Zahra has revealed classy filly Heatherly is likely to be set for an appearance in the 2016 Moir Stakes (1000m) at Moonee Valley, when she returns to racing during the forthcoming Spring Carnival.

Heatherly has been a strong and consistent performer through her entire racing career so far, but undoubtedly reached new racing highs through her recent summer and Autumn Carnival preparation; peaking in Group-level success.

Having not been seen at the races since February, Zahra told Racing Victoria that he and co-trainer Mathew Ellerton have been thrilled with the benefit taken by the filly and confirmed she will be set for a race like the 2016 Moir Stakes in spring.

“Our aim was to give her a really good break which she’s had after a long preparation and now we’ll get her back into work before it gets too cold,” Zahra said.

“She’ll probably be ready to resume racing around the end of August.

“We’ll get her fit and ready to go and then plot a path but 1000m to 1100m that’s probably her distance unless she really relaxes this time around.

“Her form at Caulfield is good and she’s won at the Valley so we’ll probably aim at those races.

“She has won up the straight but she just can pull a bit in her races. There’s plenty of options for her.”

Heatherly immediately stamped herself as a filly to follow upon debuting for a two length win in the Fujitsu Plate (1000m) at Moonee Valley in February 2015, and returned to the paddock after placing fifth in the Group 2 Blue Diamond Prelude F (1100m) and second in the Listed Festival Of Racing 1000 (1000m).

Resuming in December for second in the Total Logistic Solutions BM78 (1000m), the Lonhro filly progressed to third in the Jeep 55 Second Challenge Heat (955m) before returning to winning form in the Slickpix BM78 (1000m).

Repeating the dose in the Andrew Guy Plate (1100m) on January 30th, Heatherly produced undoubtedly a career-best performance to date to win the Group 2 Rubiton Stakes (1100m) by close to six lengths on February 13th, and returned to the paddock after a credible performance for third in the Group 1 Oakleigh Plate (1100m) a fortnight later.
