2016 Moir Stakes Field and Barrier Draw

September 28th, 2016

Nine sprinters have been confirmed in the final field for Friday night’s featured Group 1 Moir Stakes (1000m) at Moonee Valley Racecourse; highlighted by the inclusion of some of the world’s best short course specialists.

Champion sprinter Chautauqua has been confirmed to make his competitive return on Friday night and should prove particularly hard to beat after drawing into the Moir Stakes field in barrier 5.

Chautauqua returned to racing this year for a typically-slick win in the Group 1 Black Caviar Lightning Stakes (1000m), but failed to make up the distance late when third in the Group 1 Newmarket Handicap (1200m) second-up.

Returning to winning form with a classy defence of his crown in the Group 1 TJ Smith Stakes (1200m), the Encosta De Lago gelding was set for an appearance abroad and justified the decision when he stormed home to win the Group 1 Chairman’s Sprint Prize (1200m) in Hong Kong.

Buffering is a two-time winner of Moir Stakes and will launch his title defence from barrier 6 on Friday, with regular hoop Damian Browne in the saddle.

Continuing to produce strong and consistent performances and results through the 2015 spring and summer, which was capped with another win in the Group 1 Winterbottom Stakes (1200m) in Perth, Buffering was returned to the paddock after taking out the Magic Millions Plate (1300m) on January 9th.

Missing the autumn season with a view towards overseas riches, the Mossman gelding produced arguably a career-best performance to win the Group 1 Al Quoz Sprint (1000m) in the Middle East, but failed to fire in the Chairman’s Sprint Prize.

Lucky Hussler is a proven performer at the grade, track and distance and should lay a great account for himself in the Moir Stakes 2016 from the ideal barrier 2, with in-form hoop Brad Rawiller in the saddle.

Winner of the Group 1 William Reid Stakes (1200m) and Group 1 Toorak Handicap (1600m) most notably in 2015, Lucky Hussler returned from a freshen-up for success in the Magic Millions Cup (1400m) on January 9th.

Unlucky to finish second on the line in the Group 1 CF Orr Stakes (1400m) on February 13th, the Husson gelding was last seen tailing off for ninth in his defence of the William Reid Stakes on March 24th.

Three-year-old Extreme Choice will carry a race-low 52kgs in the Moir Stakes, but will likely require luck in transit after drawing the outside barrier.

Returning to racing this year for a dominant win in the Group 3 Chairman’s Stakes (1000m), Extreme Choice mustered a huge turn of foot to win the Group 1 Ladbrokes Blue Diamond (1200m) but was luckless in transit in the Group 1 Golden Rose (1200m) last time out and finished midfield.
